Five ways to cultivate the Prince of peace in your life.

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, it becomes imperative to reflect on the significance of peace during this season and explore tangible ways to spread it to others. Join me on this journey of discovering the true essence of peace and how we can embody it in our lives.

In the Gospel of Luke 2:14, the angels proclaim, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." The birth of Jesus signifies the advent of a profound and lasting peace—the kind of peace that transcends circumstances and permeates the human heart.

  • Spread Peace Through Acts of Kindness: Acts of kindness are powerful conduits for peace. Galatians 5:22-23speaks of the fruits of the Spirit, and chief among them is peace. During the Christmas season, consider engaging in acts of kindness—whether it's helping a neighbor, volunteering at a local charity, or extending forgiveness to someone.  In doing so, you not only sow seeds of peace but also create a ripple effect of goodwill.

  • Reflection and Meditation: Amidst the carols and festivities, make room for moments of quiet reflection and meditation. Psalm 29:11 reminds us that "the Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace."  Take time to meditate on the source of true peace.  This will help you carry a serene spirit as you interact with others.

  • Build Bridges Through Communication: Words possess the power to either stir strife or cultivate peace. Proverbs 16:24 encourages us, "Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." During the Christmas season, strive to communicate with grace and empathy toward your loved ones.    Extend kind words, offer encouragement, and actively listen to others. Be intentional with your spouse, children and others.  Give a compliment.  Notice something they do well and tell them about it. Build bridges that foster understanding and harmony.

  • Cultivate Peaceful Traditions:  Infuse your Christmas traditions with elements that promote peace. Whether it's reading scriptures that emphasize peace, engaging in mindful activities like candlelight meditation, or adopting a communal practice of sharing peace-focused reflections, these traditions can anchor the true spirit of Christmas in your celebrations.

  • Connect Through Reconciliation:  If there are strained relationships in your life, consider taking steps toward reconciliation. Pray for others who have conflict. pray for countries to reconcile. Matthew 5:9 states, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." By actively pursuing peace, you embody the teachings of Christ and contribute to the restoration of harmony in your community.

As we wrap our gifts and deck the halls, let's remember to unwrap the gift of peace we are given. Through acts of kindness, moments of reflection, intentional communication, peaceful traditions, and the pursuit of reconciliation, you can spread the peace that surpasses understanding. This Christmas season may the Prince of Peace reign in our hearts, and may our lives be a testament of the transformative power of peace.
